Main Points:
- Adjust your startup items. Turn off unwanted apps.
- Turn off unused Dashboard Widgets (or turn the whole thing off)
- Repair your permissions every so often, perhaps 2-3 times a year OR if you think something is fundamentally broken on your Mac. Here is a well-written article by someone who actually knows what they're talking about, who explains permissions really well.
